Gliding

Press Release

One hundred local youngsters have the opportunity to experience their first glider flight in the Queen's Golden Jubilee Year. The free flight with a British Gliding Association qualified instructor is available to young people aged 12-17. The project is intended to introduce young people to a responsible and demanding sport that they might otherwise have thought was beyond their means or ability. Preference will be given to the rural areas and towns local to Saltby Airfield - including Grantham, Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Stamford, Bottesford, Bingham and Bourne.

This Jubilee project has been created by Buckminster Gliding Club's Community Group. It serves the groups aim, namely to make links with the local community and widen involvement in the club's activities. It is supported by the Heritage Fund's "Awards for All" programme.

Application forms can be obtained from John Stanley - 01664 565292. Applications are to be endorsed by a parent and a youth group leader representing, for example, a youth club, school, Scout group, church, cadet force etc. Preliminary visits to the Airfield are welcome. Visitors will be able to see the gliding club on a normal flying day, see gliders launched, meet club members and instructors and talk to those just starting their training as glider pilots.
